California's 21 Regional Centers provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities — including many children who also have IEPs. Search by your city, county, or center name to find yours.
Regional Centers are nonprofit agencies under contract with the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS). They provide free case management and fund a wide range of services for individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and similar conditions — from birth through adulthood.
Regional Centers are separate from school districts and SELPAs, but they often serve the same children. School districts are responsible for educational services during school hours; Regional Centers cover what school cannot — including home-based support, respite care, independent living skills, and adult services after graduation.
Services from a Regional Center are based on an Individual Program Plan (IPP), which is different from — but can complement — your child's IEP.
Early Start (birth to age 3)
Regional Centers fund and coordinate services for infants and toddlers with developmental delays under California's Early Start program — the predecessor to school-based special education. When your child turns 3, the Regional Center transitions them to the school district.
Complementary services
Regional Centers can fund services that school districts don't cover, such as respite care, behavioral support at home, social skills groups, and certain therapies outside of school hours.
Shared clients
Many children with IEPs also receive Regional Center services simultaneously. If your child does, you can request that both agencies participate in the same IEP meeting — which can reduce duplication and improve coordination.
Transition planning
Regional Centers play a key role in transition planning for students approaching age 22, helping coordinate adult services, supported employment, and housing.
